Why doesn't Sims 1 work on new laptops?

I've tried playing sims 1 on newer laptops a few times, but it will randomly cut out and just close down the game.
Does anyone know why and what I can do to be able to play it?

Windows 8? I can't speak on about since I don't have it.

Windows 7 I played TS1 in compatibility mode, preferably Windows 2K. Worked like a charm.

I've played TS1 on Windows 8, and like Korvaz said, I played in Compatibility Mode and it seemed to work fine.

What's Compatibility Mode?

It basically allows you to play the game as though you are running it on an earlier version of Windows.
In order to do this, right click on the shortcut for The Sims, and select Properties.
When the window appears, there should be a tab along the top called 'Compatibility' - select it. (Other tabs include; General, Shortcut, Security & Details).
Then there should be a section called 'Compatibility Mode', select the checkbox beside 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and from the dropdown menu select 'Windows XP (Service Pack 2)' - (I use that option, not sure about everyone else though, but it works fine for me). Then click Apply and exit the window.

If I've not explained it well enough for you, let me know and I'll provide some screenshots for you.

With old games on 7, you always need to run them as administrator. That can fix a lot.
Right click the shortcut, -> Properties -> Compatability -> Run as Administrator

If it still doesnt work, try going back into the same compatability tab and check "Run this program in comptability mode for:" then choose Windows XP Sp3.
